Otter Lake Fire Department receives a grant from Department of Homeland Security (DHS) of $19,855.00 to install a new stand-by generator to power our fire station during a power outage. This generator will allow us to maintain the heat during the winter months, the weather warning siren will always operate, the fire hall will be able to fully operate during a power outage.
This is the fifth grant Otter Lake has received from DHS. In 2003 we received funding for a new 2004 Pumper Truck to replace our 1974 pumper, 2004 we received funding for hand-held radios, Thermal Imager, and a breathing air compressor, 2005 we received funding for 10 new Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (air-packs), 2007 we received two grants; one for new turn-out gear (coats, pants, boots, hoods, and gloves) for all of our firefighters, the second one was to replace our old tanker truck - a new 2500 gallon tanker truck should be delivered in October of this year from CSI Emergency Apparatus in Grayling, MI.
This type of funding will make our community and our firefighters safer and more affected in the job they are asked to do. We have been able to make our fire department fully compliant with all national standards with this type of funding; and that affects our residents safety and their insurance rates for home owners insurance.
